As Dickinson math majors, Dave Souerwine '74 and Sue Stebbins '75 planned on careers in the emerging field of computer science. As alumni, they've been integrally involved in
a series of initiatives to deepen Dickinson's quantitative offerings and help students build skills in data analytics.
They met in a math class in 1973 and married soon after Sue's graduation. Dave worked in the medical device and technology sectors, moving into management in 1987 and retiring in 2012 as president of a large U.S. company. Sue worked in computer systems for a decade before staying at home to raise their three sons. They have learned about cultures and history by traveling to all U.S. states, all Canadian provinces and 77 countries.
The Souerwines are members of the Mermaid Society, JDS and Old West Society. Through the Souerwine Fund for Quantitative Reasoning and Data Analytics, they support the Quantitative Reasoning Center, the data analytics major and QR associates. The Souerwines were integral to the establishment of Dickinson's transformational data analytics major.
In light of these long-term contributions, the couple was inducted into Dickinson's Founders Society in May 2023.
"Wherever students end up working, it's critical that they have the ability to figure out what the data is telling them to inform decisions," Dave says. "Dickinson graduates will be well prepared for superior decision-making."
