Founders' Society plaque recognizing Gary '57 and Susan Sterner for their philanthropy to Dickinson College.

Gary Sterner '57 and Susan Sterner
Gary Sterner '57 majored in English with a minor in history-an interest sparked during childhood visits to Gettysburg. An Alpha Chi Rho member and trumpet player with a passion for big band and swing, Sterner performed with Dickinson's band and glee club and founded his own big band. As an undergrad, Sterner arranged for jazz greats to perform at Dickinson, including the legendary Duke Ellington and Stan Getz.
Sterner earned a J.D. at Dickinson School of Law and joined his family business, Snyder's Potato Chips, expanding the business exponentially. At midlife, he retired as CEO and focused his attention on giving back.
Sterner was one of the founders of the first Central Pennsylvania chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. He served on the Adams County Historical Society board for 19 years. Through the Land Conservancy
of Adams County, he's helped preserve nearly 13,000 acres of land. He also supports local community organizations, including arts organizations.

Susan Sterner is a retired nurse educator who's equally devoted to her community. Like her husband, she's passionate about environmental conservation, community building and the arts. Both are loyal Dickinson community members who support the Dickinson Fund annually.
