Estate of Dr. Henry Logan

In 1977, Dr. Henry Logan was the recipient of an honorary degree from Dickinson College. At the time, this member of the class of 1910 said…”Long ago I decided that a scholarship was a better monument than a piece of granite….now I am getting a lot of pleasure out of my monument.” According to former Dickinson president, Sam Banks, Logan “demonstrated an unusual devotion to the college” through his service as well as his philanthropy. He was a member of the board of trustees from 1953 until his death in 1981, demonstrating his interest in the excellence of the educational program of the college and its financial future.
The needs of students of moderate means, similar to his background, was always foremost in his mind, demonstrated by the establishment of several scholarships as well as the Henry Logan Chair of Economics. Henry Logan “contributed more toward the support of the academic program at the college than any other living donor” according to President Banks’ comments of 1977.
In 1981, President Bank’s obituary for Henry Logan stated, “Henry recognized that, of all the gifts which one can give, the gift of knowledge is among the most valuable. So that instruction could be strengthened, he endowed a professorship….so that others could follow him to Dickinson and learn, he established several scholarship funds.”
