Hugh B. and Helen Kisner Woodward, Class of 1908, Founders Society Plaque (Memorial Hall - Old West)

By renaultt , 15 August, 2018

Hugh and Helen Woodward were installed posthumously into the Founders' Society at an event with the Sandia Foundation Board of Directors in 2017.

Remarks from President Margee Ensign included, "Hugh and Helen’s Dickinson story begins when they met and fell in love as classmates here and married three years later following Hugh’s graduation from law school. Hugh’s career took them from Pennsylvania to Colorado and New Mexico, where he worked in real estate, as a U.S. attorney and as New Mexico’s lieutenant governor. They were passionate conservationists: Hugh served on the board of the National Wildlife Federation and received the National Conservation Award. They were active members of their Albuquerque community, supporting many charitable organizations in the area. True to their philanthropic nature, Hugh and Helen formed the Sandia Foundation in 1948, a non-profit corporation to aid educational, scientific, benevolent, religious and charitable institutions. And though they lived their lives in New Mexico, Hugh and Helen never forgot Dickinson, naming their alma mater as one of the principal beneficiaries of their foundation’s funds.

The Woodwards would be astounded to know the number of students they have helped through their support at the college. More than 100 years after they graduated, their legacy lives on through our current students and in the residence hall that bears their name—Kisner-Woodward Hall."
