Durden Athletic Training Center
honoring William G. Durden ’71 and Elke F. Durden
The Durden Athletic Training Center is named for William G. Durden ’71, Dickinson’s 27th president, and his wife, Elke F. Durden, professor of German, in recognition of their many valuable contributions to the college during the 14 years they served this institution. William “Bill” Durden received his undergraduate degree from Dickinson in German and philosophy in 1971, and enjoyed a distinguished career as an educator, administrator and senior education consultant to the U.S. Department of State and various U.S. ambassadors. He and Elke returned to his alma mater in 1999, and he served as president until July 1, 2013. During his tenure, Bill led a transformation of the college that included the creation of 18 new academic posts, the construction and renovation of numerous campus buildings, the establishment of the college’s first Office of Diversity Initiatives, College Farm and Center for Sustainability Education, and the shaping of the Dickinson as a nationally recognized leader in liberal-arts education. The Durden Athletic Training Center celebrates Bill’s outstanding leadership as president of Dickinson College and the enduring friendship of Bill, Elke, Sam and Julie.

Sam Rose ’58 and Julie Walters are philanthropists and loyal supporters of Dickinson College. An All-American lacrosse player, Rose attended Dickinson on a lacrosse scholarship and played on the college’s 1958 national championship lacrosse team. In 2000, Rose and Walters established the Samuel G. Rose '58 Scholarship for economically disadvantaged students from urban areas, and in 2012, the Sam Rose '58 and Julie Walters Prize at Dickinson College for Global Environmental Activism. In 2013, the college awarded Rose the honorary degree of Doctor of Philanthropy in recognition of his far-reaching commitment to education, fairness, excellence and opportunity.
